Profine Energy is building a mega solar park in the Dominican Republic
The Santa Clara solar park with an output of 84 megawatts will soon supply the capital city of Santo Domingo with green electricity
Profine Energy GmbH from Waghäusel, Germany is a joint venture between the Wirth Group from Waghäusel and the profine Group. The international photovoltaic service provider has received government approval in the Dominican Republic to build the "Santa Clara" solar park with an output of 84 megawatts. The German Baden-Württemberg company is carrying out the project in cooperation with the experienced Dominican project developer Grupo Alfra.
Three other solar park projects are currently in the approval process. The partners have already worked successfully together on behalf of another investor on the El Soco solar park projects with 79 megawatts peak and La Victoria with 78 megawatts peak. These two plants are already in operation.
"We have excellent conditions here in the Dominican Republic. The government and President Luis Abinader are behind the expansion of renewable energies. Their share of electricity generation is already 25 percent. In addition, there is an efficient power grid that was planned and built by German engineers from Mannheim," explains Andre Oechsler from Profine Energy.
In December 2023, a law was also passed that renewable energies must be given priority and are of state interest. The good framework conditions also include solar radiation, which ensures that the approximately 140,000 modules produce around 1,550 kilowatt hours per kilowatt peak. In Germany, the comparable value is only around 1,000 kilowatt hours per kilowatt peak.
The solar park on an area of 75 hectares on the outskirts of the capital Santo Domingo will in future supply the three million inhabitants with environmentally friendly solar power.
After a planned construction period of around 12 months, the solar park, with an energy concession and a power purchase agreement (PPA) from the state-owned energy supplier Edesur Dominicana, is expected to feed around 130 gigawatt hours of electricity per year into the energy supplier's power grid. This will enable one million households in the capital to be supplied with environmentally friendly electricity.
The solar park will be supplemented by a 20-megawatt battery power storage unit in 26 steel containers. The storage unit will then hold around 30 percent of the electricity produced. These around 80 megawatt hours can guarantee the power supply for around four hours.
